What you can do to restore a fresh and alert look in the eye area. We’ll discuss simple day to day things that you can do that enhance the look of your eyes and then reveal how to find an eye cream that is truly effective. [...]

Our eyes are the main focus of our face. As we age into our 40’s, our eyes just don’t look like they use to. One may notice puffiness; wrinkles and dark circles around the eyes causing us look older and more tired. Believe me I know how this feels.

The following article contains great information on what you can do to restore a fresh and alert look in this area. We’ll discuss simple day to day things that you can do that enhance the look of your eyes and then reveal how to find an eye cream that is effective. It truly is my passion to share my understanding about beauty and the art of looking and feeling great to all of you who are seeking solutions.

Sleep Well for Great Eyes

Getting the proper rest is important and effects how you look and is essential for good health. Experts suggest that we get 7-8 hours of solid sleep. It’s been said that the best rest is going to bed at 10 pm and rise around 6 am. This is so beneficial to your health. And of course, you’ve always heard the saying, “get your beauty rest.” I believe that there is much truth in that statement.

Proper rest is often difficult with our busy lives. Some people have to work in the night and sleep during the day and say that they just don’t feel right and are more inclined to colds and sickness.

Not only the does the lack of sleep effect how our eyes look, but also the “way” in which we sleep. If you lie flat and horizontal, the fluid can accumulate around the eyes causing puffiness. Be sure to make your pillows more upright for more fluid draining (with a neck raised friendly approach) so your head is upright rather than completely flat (some may even use two pillows).

Puffiness and Under Eye Bags

Morning puffiness is one of the first signs of aging due to an accumulation of water in this delicate tissue overnight (last nights Margarita with salt didn’t help) Avoid excess alcohol intake and watch the salt sushi lovers!

What you can do:

My mom use to use tea bags soaked in cool water and placed on the lids when lying down, which is very soothing and draws the extra moisture from the eye area.

You can use a cool gel pack that you keep in your fridge that will be soothing to the eyes (especially when you have a sleepless night)

What to look for in an eye cream that combats puffiness:

You need to use an eye cream that has a yeast ingredient. I know some think yeast and say Yikes! Eye creams that contain yeast have a deflating effect and tightening for that loose puffy under eye area.

Look also for peptides and co-enzyme Q -10. This is an antioxidant that boosts cellular activity and reduces wrinkles.

Eyebright is a special herb that has anti-inflammatory properties.

A superb eye cream is the Cellular Repair Eye Crème. If I were stranded on a deserted island this is what I would want in my survival kit!

Wake up Your Eyes with Makeup and Concealer

There are those days where you need the help of makeup. Bringing more light to the eye area is a key trick to looking fresh. This is done with a concealer. My personal favorite is Laura Mercier “Secret Camouflage concealer.” It has two tones of neutral color. I use the lighter tone on the inner corners of the eyes and near the nose to brighten and lighten.

For some this may not be moisturizing enough, you can use Cellular Repair Eye Crème first as a base and then use concealer. The trick is to not look chalky or dry; you want the concealer to melt right into your skin. Pick a shade one tone lighter than your skin to brighten this area. You may need to experiment with different products for your preferred choice.

Eyeshadows

If your eyes are crepy and very puffy, keep the makeup colors more matte. Otherwise, you can use soft shimmer colors in a more neutral tone (sand colors) that give the eyes a softer appearance. The color is too dark if you have to work hard at blending it at the edges.

I like to use rich matte shadows for lining my eyes. Using a flat eye lining brush, simply blend shadow very close into the lash line (smudge it into the base of the root) this will give definition without a harsh pencil line. Eyes will appear larger, lashes fuller and thicker too (use on the lower lash too). This technique not recommended for those with deep set eyes as this will create the appearance of a more sunken look.

One may use an eye lash curler with mascara to open the eye area as well.

Don’t forget about the eyebrows and how shaping can create a more youthful appearance…see the article on this blog about eyebrow shaping.

I have always been a big believer in eating the right foods and getting proper sleep to be happy, healthy with vibrant looking skin. The foods we choose to eat will affect our skin and health. Choose wisely.

The role of Vitamin C from fruits and vegetables play an important role in the regenerating, hydrating and protection of the skin.

A diet rich in antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E and omega 3 oils) will minimize the skin wrinkles because these antioxidants fight the free radicals that show up and damage the skin. Free radicals are oxygen molecules that damage cells, breaking down collagen resulting in sagging and skin wrinkles. Your body cannot store much vitamin C, so it is important to keep the body replenished with adequate amounts of these certain fruits and vegetables throughout the day.

Antioxidants protect your skin in that they support protein fibers that keep skin taut, strong and resilient. Collagen breakdown begins in your 30’s; so eating citrus and a diet rich in omega-3 will put off aging skin especially during this time.

Recommended Fruits and Vegetables are:

Oranges, grapefruits, cantaloupes, strawberries, lemons, limes, broccoli and tomatoes. Omega-3 oil enriched foods are fish and walnuts. Try to eating grains with flax seed. I personally use flaxseed meal in yogurt and cereal.

I also like to use Vitamin C Serum in my daily skincare. Our skin is permeable, so use products that have antioxidants in them. Antioxidants will rejuvenate the epidermis giving your skin a more youthful appearance.

So there you have it; externally and internally, the things you can do to turn back the hands of time.

“you need the frame of your eyebrows to give a more youthful look as the brows pick up the eye area, which is like a mini face-lift.” [...]

Easiest way to look polished is to groom your eyebrows correctly. Not to mention it’s like giving your face a mini face-lift.

I have been shaping eyebrows for years. What I find most women do is over pluck and have poorly shaped eyebrows. “It is hard to be objective to yourself.” I tell this to women all the time as I point out their eyebrow mistakes.

As women get older they notice changes in their face and their eyes. They are striving to create a more open youthful look to their eyes by plucking and over arching their eyebrows. By over doing this, their eyes tend to look hollow.

I tell my clients all the time that “you need the frame of your eyebrows to give a more youthful look as the brows pick up the eye area, which is like a mini face-lift.”

Study the brows of children and young people. What you’ll find is that they have a natural strong brow, which creates a nice frame for their eyes.

I know some have too much brow and others too little. Even for those who lack the hair in this brow region, there are things you can do to give the illusion of a prominent brow.

Let’s continue for now with some how-to’s

How to find your arch

Take a look at the upper part of your brows, see the highest point, it will be directly above where your arch should fall. If you have straight brows above, another trick is to look straight ahead and the outer edge of the pupils, draw a line straight above and there your arch will be.

How to Clean and Shape

Tweeze the obvious hairs outside the line and under the arch. Another trick is to take an orange cuticle stick, stand it up along side of your nose to the brow area, this is where the brow should begin (anything outside of it, tweeze away). Again take the cuticle stick and slant from the bottom of your eye to the outer brow area, this is where the brow should end (anything outside of it, tweeze away). You can use the cuticle stick for finding the arch too, see the outer iris of your eye, hold up cuticle stick from there to the brow and viola there is your arch!

Lack the hairs? Here is the cure!

Not all have the natural full brow hair thing going on, but today there are so many things available to fill in and create a natural full brow.

My personal favorite is a powder base shadow. Use a short angle stiff brush.

Choose a color one shade lighter than your hair color; otherwise it will look too dramatic. Some of these eyebrow shadows have a wax to tame and give more glide and control. These work well too.

Pencils not exactly the natural look, but is quick. I find it gives too harsh a line. Brow shadows allow you more control and a natural look.

Permanent Makeup is permanent, so be sure that you find someone that is good and look at their work. The work I have seen in the past can be very artificial looking. Choose wisely.

Do trim the eyebrows when hairs get wiry and out of control. Just use a small cuticle scissors and an eye brow brush, brush upward and trim what is long.

Email me if you’d like to see a youtube clip when we publish.

Happy Brow Shaping!

Wrinkles at the outer corner of the eye – often called crow’s feet – are usually the earliest wrinkles to appear on the face, they are the tiny lines radiating on the outer corners and under the eyes. The damage is usually from sun damage, squinting and often smoking as well. The skin around the eye area is delicate. Exposure over the years to the sun causes the skin to lose elasticity. As one squint, these wrinkles form and eventually become permanent as the collagen is diminished from the ultraviolet rays.

Smokers can develop these eye wrinkles earlier than those who don’t smoke. Think about it, as one takes that puff, they often squint their eyes to avoid the smokes irritating effects – not to mention how drying it is to the skin as well.

Steps to prevent and minimize crow’s feet:

I personally have been a victim of eye wrinkles and have used an eye cream faithfully for several years. I have noticed a remarkable difference around my eye area. I have tried all the products, you name it. What I found to be the best for me were the following tips and ingredients.

So breathe a sigh of relief…. Your crow’s feet don’t own you anymore.

Use peptide enriched moisturizer to lessen the wrinkles around this eye area. Use twice a day morning and night.

Be sure to use a sunscreen. Even while you are in a car driving, the damaging rays of the sun can penetrate the car window.

Use a gentle motion when washing your face. No tugging or pulling around the eyes.

Remove makeup with olive oil.

Avoid mineral oil and petroleum base products. It will only make your skin more dehydrated. It gives one a false sense of moisture, not to mention that it is carcinogenic to the body.

Use an eye cream that has key ingredients needed for this delicate area.

Ingredients to look for are:

Peptides, Co Q10, Vitamins A, C and E

Why these anti aging ingredients work so well:

Peptides diminish the fine lines and wrinkles

Co- Q10 antioxidant that helps boost cellular activity. It will fortify the skin’s defenses against UV damage.

Vitamins A, C and E healing, improves texture and tone, promotes cellular renewal.

Aloe vera has remarkable healing properties that can draw and hold oxygen to the skin.

Almond and Grapeseed oil for hydrating without the oily residue. These natural oils are so easily penetrated into the skin. The eye area takes this moisture so well.

A More Aggressive Approach

Often my clients ask me what my thoughts are about Botox.

Truly Botox injections are a more aggressive approach which can be pricey, but works well for diminishing the signs of eye wrinkles. Note: Temporary in that it lasts for about 3 months and your eye wrinkles are back.

You need to find a doctor that is well trained in this procedure.

Even with Botox treatments you still need to moisturize and protect this delicate area.

Treat your eyes kindly, they are the windows to your soul.

This is of great importance especially as we age. Around the age of 30 our cell turnover rate diminishes, what we begin to notice is that our skin just doesn’t look as radiant as when we were in our 20’s.

I had the opportunity to be in a meeting with a plastic surgeon talking about skincare. He mentioned to me that the most important thing women can do for their skin is exfoliate. He said to me that it constantly allows for the removal of dead skin cells allowing for new more vibrant energy to the skin. He also mentioned that it also primes the skin for the benefits of skin serums and moisturizing.

Men shave everyday and what they are doing in a sense is removing dead skin cells all the time. No, you need not shave

There are 2 different types of facial scrubs. Aggressive and then a more gentle scrub, Depending on your skin, if you have more normal-oily skin you can use the Microdermabrasion scrub which is more aggressive. This scrub is to be used once a week.

A gentle scrub that can be used 2-3 times a week is the Citrus Jojoba scrub which is gentle and moisturizing.

You can use both these scrubs in a week, but again the Microdermabrasion only once a week and then on the 3rd day use the Citrus Jojoba scrub.

You will notice the difference in your skin. You have to be faithful with the routine to allow the radiance back into your skin.

Another thing to note is that you can use on the neck and décolleté and the back of your hands too.

Happy Exfoliating!!!

1. PARABENS Parabens are chemical preservatives added to personal care products for extending shelf life, and widely used in tens of thousand types of cosmetic products today. Four main parabens are in use: methyl, ethyl, propyl and butylparabens; many products will have 2 or more of these chemicals as part of a preservative system. Even the definition of parabens is scary, as it states, “…May alter hormone levels, possibly increasing risks for certain types of cancer, impaired fertility, or alteration of the development of a fetus or young child. Parabens are Endocrine disruptors: They are suspected of presenting risks to the reproductive system that could include reduced chances for a healthy, full-term pregnancy, or for becoming pregnant, based on laboratory studies or studies of human populations…”

2. ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL A solvent and denaturant, (poisonous substance that changes another substance’s natural qualities) derived from petroleum and used in anti-freeze and as a solvent in shellac.

3. MINERAL OIL A petroleum ingredient that coats the skin like plastic wrap, inhibiting the skin to breathe and absorb essential moisture and nutrition. Baby oil is 100% mineral oil, and disabling the skin from releasing toxins, which may lead to acne and other disorders of the skin.

4. PEG This is an abbreviation for polyethylene glycol that is used in making cleansers to dissolve oil and grease. PEG’s contribute to stripping the Natural Moisture Factor, leaving the immune system vulnerable. They are also potentially carcinogenic.

5. PROPYLENE GLYCOL (PG) This ingredient is actually the active component in antifreeze. There is no difference between the PG used in industry and the PG used in personal care products. Used in cosmetics as a surfactant and wetting agent.

6. SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) & SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES) Possibly the most dangerous of all ingredients in personal care today, these compounds can be found in car wash soaps, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers. Research has implicated SLS in damaging the immune system, especially within the skin. Skin layers may separate and inflame due to its protein denaturing properties, staying in the body for up to five days. Other studies have indicated that SLS easily penetrates through the skin and enters and maintains residual levels in the heart, the liver, the lungs and the brain.

7. DEA. (diethanolamine) MEA (monoethanolamine) TEA (triethanolamine) DEA and MEA are usually listed on the ingredient label in conjunction with the compound being neutralized. Thus look for names like Cocoamide DEA or MEA, Lauramide DEA, etc. These are hormone-disrupting chemicals and are known to form cancer causing nitrates and nitrosamines. These are commonly found in most personal care products that foam, including bubble baths, body washes, shampoos, soaps and facial cleansers.

8. FD&C COLOR PIGMENTS Many color pigments cause skin sensitivity and irritation. Absorption of certain colors can cause depletion of oxygen in the body and even death according to A Consumer’s Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients. Debra Lynn Dadd says in Home Safe Home, “Colors that can be used in foods, drugs, and cosmetics are made from coal tar. There is a great deal of controversy about their use, because animal studies have shown almost all of them to be carcinogenic.”

9. FRAGRANCE Artificial Fragrance (NOT ESSENTIAL OILS WHICH ARE PLANT DERIVED) is present in most deodorants, shampoos, sunscreens, skin care, body care and baby care products. Many of the compounds in fragrances are carcinogenic or otherwise toxic. Clinical observation by medical doctors have shown that exposure to fragrances can affect the central nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity, irritability, inability to cope, and other behavioral changes.

10. IMIDAZOLIDINYL UREA and DMDM HYDANTOIN These are two of the many preservatives that release formaldehyde (formaldehyde-donors). According to the Mayo Clinic, formaldehyde can irritate the respiratory system, cause skin reactions and trigger heart palpitations. Exposure to formaldehyde may cause joint pain, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness and loss of sleep. It can also aggravate coughs and colds and trigger asthma. Serious side effects include weakening of the immune system and cancer. Nearly all brands of skin, body and hair care, antiperspirants and nail polish found in stores contain formaldehyde-releasing ingredients.

11. PVP/COPOLYMER Petroleum derived found in cosmetics and hair products. Considered toxic.

12. METHYLISOTHIAZOLINE Widely used as a preservative in shampoos, creams, also found in baby products. Prolonged exposure to low levels of methylisothiazoline (MIT) can have potentially harmful effects to a developing nervous system.

13. FORMALDEHYDE Used in nail polish and cosmetics as a germicide and disinfectant. Carcinogenic, banned in Japan and Sweden.

14. BHA and BHT Promotes breakdown of vitamins, such as Vitamin D. Endocrine disrupters, elevated cholesterol levels. Carcinogenic.

15. COCAMIDOPROPYL BETAINE Can cause facial dermatitis, allergic response.

16. AMMONIUM INGREDIENTS Extremely toxic and carcinogenic.

17. TALC Linked to ovarian cancer, can contain asbestos.

18. STEARALKONIUM CHLORIDE This ingredient was developed by the fabric industry as a fabric softener, now is used in hair products and creams. Highly Toxic.

19. HYDROQUINONE Widely used in skin lightening products. Hydroquinone is a well known carcinogen. Very toxic. Banned in Europe

20. COAL TAR Low level exposure is linked to cancer. Petrochemical.

21. DIMETHICONE Possible carcinogenic. Caused tumors and mutation in lab animals.

Our products do not contain these dangerous ingredients. These ingredients are widely used in the industry of face and body care products. We believe that consumers should be educated so they can make better choices about what they use on their face and body. This is a basic list. There are many more. Check my blog for future updates or feel free to share any additional information.

A woman had inquired about the skincare line that I developed. She asked if I actually use the products as she noted that my skin looked beautiful.

Interesting question I thought to myself. “Absolutely and I love the products!” I went on to explain to her why these products are special, in that they do not contain harmful chemicals, and yet contain the pristine anti-aging ingredients that are essential for age defying results.

This month of October is breast cancer awareness month which brings me back to the whole mission of the skincare line. My mother being a breast cancer survivor (I write this as I will be going for my yearly mammogram in a few hours…always an unsettling thing for any woman). This product line was born out of the many hours of research and concern for my mother, me and all the women that face the possibility of the disease.

We live in a toxic world and what we expose ourselves to the food we eat, the products that we use in our home, etc. With the years of research and compiling all the information about living safe in a toxic world, my husband and I decided it was essential to write a small book to give one a sense of control with education on how to protect themselves.

With all this knowledge I became inspired to developing my own skincare line. It all began in the kitchen until I found a organic chemist to work to achieve my objectives.

So as I answered my clients’ question – “Yes, I use these products with faith and confidence.”

The purpose of using anti-aging serum is to remove the sign of aging and revitalize the skin. A good anti-aging serum contains a powerful and concentrated formula of nutrients and vitamins aimed at absorption into the deep layers of the skin. The fluid like quality is high in concentration of anti-aging ingredients targeting the aging process such as dehydration, fine lines, wrinkles and facial pigmentation.

Vitamins A, C and E are essential in the anti-aging serum as they are anti-oxidants. Vitamin A is retinol which when absorbed into the skin works its magic on increasing the collagen production, resulting in smoother, less wrinkled skin. Vitamin C also increases the production of collagen as well. Vitamin E increases cellular renewal and has a preservative quality as well. This skin renewal therapy does not occur overnight. Be patient.

Having a lifestyle that is unhealthy, such as poor eating habits, smoking, alcohol consumption and too much sun exposure damages our skin speeding up the aging process.

Anti-oxidants contained in the anti-aging repair serum diminish the signs of time.

Anti-aging serums are intensive treatments for reducing the signs of aging. Anti-aging serums target certain areas of the face prone to aging, such as around the eyes, nose, mouth and the forehead. These areas are the first areas to show the signs of aging as skin is stretched repeatedly and ultimately unable to return to its youthful state.

You see, Anti-aging serums when used on a routine basis will nourish and rejuvenate your skin, insuring a dramatic reduction in wrinkles, lines and overall loss of elasticity. The anti-aging serum should be a part of your everyday routine and you will soon notice that your skin has more youthful and radiant glow.

Most eye moisturizing creams lack the powerful ingredients that are necessary for an effective anti aging eye cream.

It is never too early to start using an eye cream. The skin around the eyes requires extra care as it is fragile and vulnerable and the first area to show the signs of aging. This area requires a product with the proper ingredients targeted to renew this delicate area.

It’s important that the ingredients of the eye cream have superior ingredients that will treat the delicate skin around the eyes while repairing the signs of aging. You’ve heard it said before that the eyes are the windows to the soul, yet this delicate skin is the first area to show the effects of time and stress.

Ingredients should contain :

CO-ENZYME Q-10

CoQ10 – Wrinkles appear when skin loses its elasticity. This is due to decreased collagen production. Everyday life, cell metabolism, exposure to sun and other environmental factors, toxins, cigarette smoke – all result in production of free radicals.

Co-enzyme Q10 has exceptional antioxidant properties. Research has shown that it can effectively counteract free radical damage and provide considerable protection against UVA-induced depletion of cell membrane. Simply put, it will reduce damage to the collagen and elastin production process and help you reduce wrinkles.

GRAPE SEED OIL

Grape seed oil is an essential ingredient for damaged and stressed tissues, providing regenerative and restructuring properties which permits a strong direction of skin hydration – due to it’s high linoleic acid content. It is especially effective for repair of the skin around the eyes.

SOY PEPTIDES

Soy Peptides improves skin texture, circulation and reduces dark circles.

Peptides skin care products have been shown to increase collagen production in the skin. Why is this important? Lack of collagen causes the skin to become dull, depleted, and prematurely wrinkled. Collagen is depleted as skin ages, and stress speeds up the aging process. Peptides skin care products help retain skin’s natural collagen.

Vitamins A, C, E – enhances skin’s elasticity, tone and texture.

VITAMIN A is a powerful free-radical scavenger used as an anti-aging and healing ingredient. Topically applied vitamin A is one of only three vitamins able to be absorbed by the skin.

VITAMIN C is a potent anti-oxidant that may play an essential role in building collagen, the connective tissue that holds us together. Found in citrus fruits. Because of its acidic nature, it also helps improve tone and texture by removing dead skin cells and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

VITAMIN E is an anti-oxidant and cellular renewal ingredient that when combined with vitamins A and C acts as a preservative in the oil phase of cosmetic formulations.

YEAST

Yeast extract soothes and helps calm inflamed skin. Yeast is the new buzzword for tightening loose, puffy under eye skin and as a deflating effect.

RICE BRAN

Rice bran contains high percentage of oleic acid and penetrates very well and is particularly suitable for sensitive skin. With continued use, it will make your skin feel and look years younger as soon as the new skin cells have had a chance to renew and replace the old cells.

In Conclusion

The essential ingredients contained in the Cellular Eye Repair Crème are aimed at the natural re-growth of lost collagen that causes the signs of aging eyes. This eye cream is formulated to provide the essential moisture needed for the delicate skin surrounding the eye area.
