Our eyes are the main focus of our face. As we age into our 40’s, our eyes just don’t look like they use to. One may notice puffiness; wrinkles and dark circles around the eyes causing us look older and more tired. Believe me I know how this feels.
The following article contains great information on what you can do to restore a fresh and alert look in this area. We’ll discuss simple day to day things that you can do that enhance the look of your eyes and then reveal how to find an eye cream that is effective. It truly is my passion to share my understanding about beauty and the art of looking and feeling great to all of you who are seeking solutions.
Sleep Well for Great Eyes
Getting the proper rest is important and effects how you look and is essential for good health. Experts suggest that we get 7-8 hours of solid sleep. It’s been said that the best rest is going to bed at 10 pm and rise around 6 am. This is so beneficial to your health. And of course, you’ve always heard the saying, “get your beauty rest.” I believe that there is much truth in that statement.
Proper rest is often difficult with our busy lives. Some people have to work in the night and sleep during the day and say that they just don’t feel right and are more inclined to colds and sickness.
Not only the does the lack of sleep effect how our eyes look, but also the “way” in which we sleep. If you lie flat and horizontal, the fluid can accumulate around the eyes causing puffiness. Be sure to make your pillows more upright for more fluid draining (with a neck raised friendly approach) so your head is upright rather than completely flat (some may even use two pillows).
Puffiness and Under Eye Bags
Morning puffiness is one of the first signs of aging due to an accumulation of water in this delicate tissue overnight (last nights Margarita with salt didn’t help) Avoid excess alcohol intake and watch the salt sushi lovers!
What you can do:
- My mom use to use tea bags soaked in cool water and placed on the lids when lying down, which is very soothing and draws the extra moisture from the eye area.
- You can use a cool gel pack that you keep in your fridge that will be soothing to the eyes (especially when you have a sleepless night)
What to look for in an eye cream that combats puffiness:
- You need to use an eye cream that has a yeast ingredient. I know some think yeast and say Yikes! Eye creams that contain yeast have a deflating effect and tightening for that loose puffy under eye area.
- Look also for peptides and co-enzyme Q -10. This is an antioxidant that boosts cellular activity and reduces wrinkles.
- Eyebright is a special herb that has anti-inflammatory properties.
- A superb eye cream is the Cellular Repair Eye Crème. If I were stranded on a deserted island this is what I would want in my survival kit!
Wake up Your Eyes with Makeup and Concealer
There are those days where you need the help of makeup. Bringing more light to the eye area is a key trick to looking fresh. This is done with a concealer. My personal favorite is Laura Mercier “Secret Camouflage concealer.” It has two tones of neutral color. I use the lighter tone on the inner corners of the eyes and near the nose to brighten and lighten.
For some this may not be moisturizing enough, you can use Cellular Repair Eye Crème first as a base and then use concealer. The trick is to not look chalky or dry; you want the concealer to melt right into your skin. Pick a shade one tone lighter than your skin to brighten this area. You may need to experiment with different products for your preferred choice.
Eyeshadows
If your eyes are crepy and very puffy, keep the makeup colors more matte. Otherwise, you can use soft shimmer colors in a more neutral tone (sand colors) that give the eyes a softer appearance. The color is too dark if you have to work hard at blending it at the edges.
I like to use rich matte shadows for lining my eyes. Using a flat eye lining brush, simply blend shadow very close into the lash line (smudge it into the base of the root) this will give definition without a harsh pencil line. Eyes will appear larger, lashes fuller and thicker too (use on the lower lash too). This technique not recommended for those with deep set eyes as this will create the appearance of a more sunken look.
One may use an eye lash curler with mascara to open the eye area as well.
Don’t forget about the eyebrows and how shaping can create a more youthful appearance…see the article on this blog about eyebrow shaping.
